While oil and natural gas price rises, alternative energy is another option that we need to pay attention. at present, fuel from plant biomass is highly needed in world markets especially for biomass pellets that play an important role in electricity generating for power plants or industries. The advantages are that they produce more heat than other biomasses and can be conveniently transported due to high density with little ashes. Additionally, they slightly have impacts on the environment especially for Bamboo pellets as bamboo quickly grows in environments in Thailand, and it is environmentally friendly that can reduce a problem of global warming. It delays landslide and corrosion along the rivers also.
Southern-Border Provinces Administration Center (SBPAC) under the leadership of RAdm. Somkiat Phonprayun, a navy, who performed duties as the commander of the Royal Thai Marine Corps. in Narathiwat Province before playing a role as the secretary general of the Southern-Border Provinces Administration Center, created new works in dimensions of developing various projects and promoting and supporting cultivation of bamboos. It is a project of hope in the southern-border provinces. SBPAC cooperated with Southern-border Farmers Council and Prince of Songkla University provided that SBPAC was the center of coordination and connection with every sector in driving projects for development of life quality of people in the southern-border provinces with a guideline of promoting mixed agriculture through economic bamboo cultivation. The target area of cultivation must be at least 300, 000 Rai, with the agricultural network to gather and screen farmers and increase cultivation areas according to this target. For academic affairs, Prince of Songkla University studied and provided information of areas suitable for bamboo cultivation, and developed economic bamboo species in the name of Yala Bamboo, as a vernacular plant in southern-border provinces
Apart from governments sectors, the Farmers Council and academicians, the private sectors connect with investors from DK Energy Co., Ltd, Wuam Corporation, GB Energy Co., Ltd, and Woodplus Co., Ltd, to purchase economic bamboos with moderate size of the farmers joining this project. Rate of trading is 650-700 Baht/ton for 21 years (2020-2040) by signing in a memorandum of understanding. The pilot bamboo cultivation is in Yala area on 5,000-Rai land with Sangmon and Bong Species. After cultivated, the bamboos grew and sprouted quickly with think and firm flesh. It is anticipated that the biomass will be much obtained, and it can be processed as biomass pellets for further exporting.
To start the project, an economic bamboo production learning center is established as a model of economic forest industry with comprehensive processing methods. People can participate in distributing it all over areas in 5 southern-border provinces, leading to the founding of “economic bamboo industry for people” No actions will result in problems with the natural resources and environmental pollution in the southern-border provinces, which can affect quality of life of people. It may be a model of sustainable development to meet the target of sustainable development with emphasis on building a society where people can live together peacefully and happily. This can happen by turning the southern-border provinces to be the economic bamboo city with comprehensive services and management.
